Review of

Playschool Nursery (Harpenden)

We have been incredibly let down by this nursery. My son attended for nearly two and a half years, and my young daughter was due to join him with us having had a space confirmed and our deposit paid. Three months before she was due to start, the nursery informed us that due to an admin error, there
was in fact no place available for her with little explanation given.
We have had to deal with a lot of unnecessary stress finding her (and my son) an alternative setting at short notice which resulted in me having to delay going back to work.
In terms of the nursery setting staff turnover seems to be very high, new staff rarely introduce themselves and there were times we were unaware of who my child's key worker was.

Reply from Management Team at Playschool Nursery (Harpenden)

Playschool Nursery strives for excellence and has supported families in Harpenden for over 15 years. When there has been an error we believe in being honest - it is one of the core values of the nursery. As soon as we realised our mistake we contacted the parent with our apologies for offering a place that was not available. An alternative place for both children was offered at one of our other nurseries. The parent declined this offer and a full refund with interest was provided. A full review of administrative processes has been conducted to ensure this error does not occur again. As an early years provider, Ofsted requires us to inform parents of any changes to key persons that may affect their child, and this is our priority in all communication. Regular updates including any changes are provided to parents via handovers, email communication and regular development reviews. Parents also have the option to request a meeting with their keyworker at any point. Staff retention and development are very important to us, and we are very active in this area as reflected in the Gold Status for Investors in People awarded to Playschool Nursery in 2022 with a reappraisal of the Gold standard in 2023 and 2024. Along with on-the-job coaching and mentoring our practitioners have formal touch points where we check in on their wellbeing as well as identify their training and development needs via weekly supervisions with Room Leads. There is also an annual appraisal process for all staff conducted with the support of senior management and clearly defined career paths for our teams.

Playschool Nursery (Welwyn Garden City)

Nursery director flatly refused to allow my son to be potty trained as she personally considered it unhygienic and explained that they do not do potty training in the under-2 room. Once my son changed the nursery, the new nursery were happy to support me in this task, so not clear why they could not
do it.
The child was often returned dirty, I had to raise this on numerous occasions, but it did not seem to work. Staff wear long fake nails so not clear how they manage to take care of children.
My son’s key worker was changed but we were never introduced until we eventually left the nursery. Names were constantly misspelt in emails, I reported issues in the nursery but they were acted upon only after a month of chasing.
Staff are constantly changing and are inexperienced, the manager changed 3 times in less than a 9 month period.
I was unhappy and filed official complaint, nursery director forgot about it and tried to resolve issues by saying that I better leave the setting.
