An established childcare setting, with over 30 years experience. The Village Preschool E17 is a parent run, 'not for profit' childcare setting, registered with the Charity Commission, fully regulated by Ofsted, and a member of the Preschool Learning Alliance

They are proud of their commitment to providing affordable childcare and to supporting families from diverse backgrounds.

Founded in 1990 as a playgroup by local mums, The Village Preschool quickly developed into a popular early years childcare setting in E17. The growth demanded a larger space and in 2017 they moved to the current location at Walthamstow Cricket, Tennis and Squash Club.

You won’t find a location like this anywhere else. The team are committed to ensuring children have as much outdoor time as possible, even when the weather is against them. The children play and learn in a large hall with doors opening directly on to an enclosed play area to allow for free flowing indoor/outdoor play. When the kids need even more space to run around, the staff open the gates on to the cricket field.

The nursery has a dedicated Forest School area and two fully qualified Forest School Practitioners within the team. Specific Forest School sessions take place 3 times a week, although the kids will find they spend more time there during the spring and summer terms.

The Village Preschool is a play based setting but a child’s learning outcomes and development are central to everything they do. They want you to be confident that your child is being prepared for school whilst gaining social skills and having the most fun possible.

The team is made up of staff that have been working together for 8 years so you know that your children are going to be looked after by the same people day in and day out, giving you the peace of mind that they will feel settled and at home at the nursery.

    Parents are encouraged to walk or cycle where possible - a bike rack is available should you wish to leave your bike during your child's sessions.

A wonderful nursary run by staff who care deeply about the kids and deliver a great set of activities. The nursary has its own forest school on site (rare for London nurseries) run by specialist staff and a regular drama class run by young actors. It has been fantastic to see our son develop at the
nursary while forming deep connections with staff and other children. A gem.

We are thrilled that we found the Village Pre-School; it provides a varied, stimulating, caring, fun and safe space for our daughter to thrive in. The staff are so dedicated and go above and beyond for the children. It took a while for my daughter to settle, and they have been so patient with her. This
week she declared 'I don't want the summer holidays, I have so much fun at preschool!'.
The setting itself is so rare in London, the children have access to the huge field and on-site forest school and it feels like we are in a village rather than a city. Every day the staff put out new and varied activities for the children, and my daughter has enjoyed a range of themed days at the preschool. The outdoor activities in particular look like so much fun.
We have no complaints! Thank you so much.

Both my children have attended The Village Preschool E17 and they have had wonderful experiences both times. There is a play-led ethos but there is a good balance with learning, particularly for older children who are about to start school. The Forest School and outdoor spaces are also amazing, but
the best thing about the preschool is the staff - who are phenomenal and care deeply about the children. The preschool also benefits from a wonderful management team and parent-led committee who are dedicated and passionate. I'm so sad that my youngest will be leaving soon - he will miss it so much!

I am so pleased that I discovered The Village Pre-School E17 and sent both of my children there. The staff are lovely and supportive, the outside spaces are beyond any other Nursery or preschool in the area and both of my children are extremely happy there.
My son has additional needs and the SENCO
at The Village Pre-School E17 has gone above and beyond to ensure that he gets the support that he needs and to ensure that he will continue to get the support that he needs when he attends primary school.
A fantastic nursery that I am happy to travel to from Chingford every morning. It's worth the journey for my childrens' happiness.

I will never recommend this nursery! My daughter who was just two at the time joined this nursery, and when she first joined I stayed with her for the first 3 days. The staff looked friendly, they were spending time with each child, the children looked happy, reviews were great so I thought I found
the perfect place, but I had the worst experience.
When I went to pick her up the first day, I found her crying at the window, no teacher was next to her and she just looked very scared. I just said it's her first day and it will take time for her to settle.
The second day I went to pick her up I was shocked, my daughter's face was full of scratches, her nappy was not changed, and she was left with her poo nappy for hours, she was crying again at the window and no staff was next to her. At home, I also saw scratches on her leg and back, she had the worst nappy rash and she cried a lot. The teachers only said they were sorry and I took my daughter out of the nursery.

I am very happy with the nursery school, my first experience. When I googled it, I had no clue where it was but I came and I felt a peace enter myself. For my son as he came here, I saw he was gradually getting involved with the preschool routine. He is happier coming in and is learning more and more
things. I am a proud mum and he is happy. I am seeing a change in the daily activities they do. He has learnt a lot in his first year and is doing very well. This is a very good preschool. They play outside and do garden play and he is safe and comfortable.

We had just moved to Highams Park and were struggling to find a new nursery place for our twin boys. Some friends recommended we should try The Village. We were worried about the change, but ever since the boys ran through the door on their first day, they have loved spending time at their new preschool.
The key workers, and indeed, all the staff, are so caring and personable; it's really been a wonderful find. The 'forest school' area is such a great use of the space and gives the boys loads of outside space to explore! We receive great updates through the 'app', so feel connected to what the boys have been up to each day. We also recently took the boys to The Village's yearly fair for their birthday celebrations. The day was fully organised by the staff, and whether it was the bouncy castle, the fire engine visit or the ukulele band playing, there was not a frown in sight. The local neighboured families came out in force, and it was clear there was a lot of love for The Village Preschool!

My son has attended The Village Preschool for 18 months (since age 3) and loved it. He has progressed and learnt so much. It’s such a warm environment with hugs and quiet time if they need it, as well as energetic physical activities, learning and socialising. He was assigned a keyworker who was so
supportive, and using the app kept me up to date with what he had been doing during the day as well as parent consults about his development. Their Forest school space is wonderful and the real diamond of the nursery so “Welly Wednesdays” was always my sons favourite day of the week. I recommend The Village Preschool highly and think the staff are outstanding.

This preschool is a real gem. Amazing bright and airy room, with a large outdoor playground, all refurbished this year. Has access to the large cricket ground and also does Forest School four sessions a week. The fantastic new Head has created a wonderful rich curriculum to engage the children. The
staff are longstanding, very caring and engaged. Great pre-school and because it is a charity, prices are low for the borough.

Julia Savage-Wilson

Job Title: Head of Preschool

Joined: 2022

Julia studied Sociology and Education at Northeastern University, USA and received a BSc and Masters in the Art of Teaching. She has been a classroom teacher for over 12 years and held Middle and Senior leadership positions in her Early Years, State Primary, Private and International Schools.


Julia is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A but married a Brit and found her way to E17. She has three children all of which in schools and early years settings in Walthamstow.


Julia says "I am having an amazing time at The Village Preschool and I am looking forward to my continued journey here with the team, children and wonderful families that join us. I know all of the children and their families will thoroughly enjoy the experience and I look forward to meeting you all."


Beth

Beth Aggus

Job Title: Deputy Head of Preschool & Forest School Practitioner

Joined: 2011

Beth trained as a Level 3 Practitioner after her children were in high school, formerly working in the Insurance Sector in the city.


She was responsible for bringing Forest School to the setting and qualified in 2017 as a Forest School Practitioner - she brings so much passion to engaging children in the outdoors, whatever the weather and was recently promoted to Deputy Head after 8 years of working at the preschool. She plays a big role in the pastoral care of the staff and the families who attend the setting and
was born and raised in Waltham Forest and is a mum to three adult men.


She says "I love working here. Most of us have worked together for many years and lots of the families come back to us with each child so there really is a sense of community and belonging. You could go so far as to call it a family."


Ailsa

Ailsa Betts

Job Title: SENDCo

Joined: 2022

Ailsa joined The Village Preschool E17 in 2022. Ailsa is a qualified teacher and has been working in Waltham Forest Schools for the past three years. Prior to this, she spent many years in the Hospital and Home Teaching Service where she worked with the most vulnerable children across the borough who were unable to attend school due to medical conditions.


Ailsa is originally from Glasgow and moved to Walthamstow in 1999, she is married and has two daughters.


Ailsa is "passionate about special needs and ensuring families are able to access the support they are entitled to. I believe that all children, regardless of their needs and abilities, can learn from each other and I am excited about embracing and encouraging inclusion at The Village Preschool E17".


Indra

Indra Gray

Job Title: Early Years Practitioner (Level 3) & Forest School Lead

Joined: 2018

Both my daughters attended the preschool, and I was part of the Management Committee before training as an Early Years Practitioner and joining the team in 2018.


Indra is a qualified Forest School Lead, taking charge of the learning and activities each week. Indra also has a passion for creative play and often brings her characters into the classroom to develop learning.


Born in Lithuania, Indra now lives in Walthamstow with her husband and two daughters.

Emma Rutter

Job Title: Teaching and Learning Lead

Hello! I'm Emma, a passionate and dedicated Early Years Teacher with a lifelong dream of shaping young minds. I proudly hold a Bachelor of Education Degree (Primary), specialising in Literacy, which I earned in Canberra, Australia.


During my degree, I immersed myself in various educational environments, including working in a nursery and diverse settings focused on children under the age of five. These experiences provided me with invaluable insights into child development and the important stages of early childhood. I was honoured to be promoted to the role of Room Lead for Toddlers during this time, which allowed me to lead and support their growth.


Seeking further experience, I expanded my teaching career in a local Catholic school, where I taught Year One and Reception classes. Additionally, I had the privilege of overseeing extension and enrichment programs for gifted and talented children. This opportunity deepened my commitment to providing personalised and enriching educational experiences.


London became my home in 2014, and since then, I have continued to enhance my expertise in both state and independent schools. In North London, I embraced the role of Lower School Coordinator, where I oversaw teaching and learning from Reception up to Year 2. Recently, I had the privilege of serving as the Acting Head of Nursery at a leading independent Montessori nursery in West London.


I believe in creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and inspired to explore their potential. I plan and implement engaging activities that stimulate cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth.
I create personalised learning plans for each child, considering their strengths, interests, and developmental milestones.


I conduct regular observations and assessments to track each child's progress and provide valuable feedback to parents & caregivers and I actively involve parents and caregivers in their child's learning journey, providing regular communication, workshops, and resources to support their involvement.

Simone graduated from Business School in Denmark before moving to Walthamstow 20 years ago.


She has worked in the travel sector in marketing and customer relations for many years before making a move into Charity Fundraising. During this time she found her passion for accountancy and has pursued a qualification in this area.


Simone brings a wealth of experience and has fantastic ideas for the growth and development of The Village Preschool E17. She has two young children who are in primary school in the borough.
