Toad Hall Nursery is a 107-place nursery in the heart of Hitchin, offering a child-led approach to encourage the development of the children in their care. Children are given the opportunity to explore, interact, engage and thrive within the care of the highly experienced staff team.

Partnership with parents is at the heart of everything they do, from planning social events, holding quarterly Parent Forums to discuss and share ideas, and providing all children with ‘Home Learning’ ideas and opportunities to share with their carers at home.

The nursery is made up of 7 rooms, each catering for a different age group which enables them to provide facilities and resources for the right age and stage of each child. Weekly activities are planned for the children around their interests, utilising their state-of-the-art facilities both inside and outside, in their large gardens which also boast a growing patch and mud kitchen.

There are three garden areas which again cater for different ages of children, which enable more children to access the outside provisions at one time and gives opportunity for children to assess their own risks, develop their physical abilities and engage in the nursery’s extra initiatives, such as their Cook and Grow Programme. The children plant and care for their own produce in the Nature Garden, which they then help to prepare before the qualified chef cooks in their on-site kitchen. All meals and snacks are prepared and cooked on site, and the nursery prides itself on sourcing only the best quality ingredients for the children to enjoy.

Toad Hall is fantastic! Our son is so very happy there, as was his brother before him. The Little Toads Team are so caring and they really do know our little man and all his craziness. Our son looks forward to going to nursery each day and is always happy at pickup too.

Lovely idea to be invited as a grandparent to the nursery for Father’s Day. It was great to see the children enjoying themselves, and it gives you a better understanding of the things they tell you about their day at nursery.

Toad Hall in Hitchin is a wonderful nursery. Our son was in Ladybirds, having moved from Little Toads after a few days when we felt the fit wasn't quite right in the small room. The staff in the office were always incredibly helpful and accessible - so kindly and genuinely listening to any question
or concern. All the staff members in Ladybirds were wonderful and our son loved every one of them. They were fantastic at helping him learn new skills and ideas. He always came home happy, and within just a week, was reaching for them for cuddles after we dropped him off. Every staff member knows all the children by name. Just a fantastic nursery - we love them!

Our daughter started at Toadhall in September 2021 and we continue to be incredibly happy with our decision to send her here. The staff in Butterflies (and Hedgehogs where our little one started back in September) are fabulous! Communication is super (we love the communication books that are sent home
at the end of each day) and we really enjoy reading all about the wonderful activities that the children have been up to on Facebook. A big shout out to the management too, who are friendly and approachable and who make us parents feel special too with things like the breakfast treats on Valentine’s morning. Thanks, Toadhall!

Our daughter started in the Hedgehog room in September 2021. She was only 7 months and I was anxious about her starting while still so little. Immediately upon meeting the manager, I relaxed. Every staff member I have met at Toad Hall has put me at ease and reassured me. My daughter's key worker is
fantastic and communication is great. I am amazed at the activities they get up to during the day! The nursery always seems to be finding new ways to engage with not only the children but the parents too. Very happy with our decision to start her at Toad Hall.

Our son went to Toad Hall Nursery Hitchin for 2 and a half years until he started school. We joined in stressful circumstances as his previous nursery had closed suddenly, but the staff at Toad Hall did everything they could to help him settle in. There's a lovely atmosphere at the nursery and you can
tell the staff are a real team, who care about providing a warm and nurturing environment. Despite the upheaval of lockdown, the staff never waivered in their dedication to the children's wellbeing, and we are so grateful that our son was able to continue going to nursery during a time that was incredibly unsettling for children. He was very well prepared for school and loved his time at Toad Hall. We would highly recommend it as a nursery setting.

Toad Hall is a lovely nursery setting, both my children love attending. The staff are a credit to the nursery, they are warm and friendly and care about the children they look after. Toad Hall are active at developing their staff and I’ve seen shy trainees turn into confident nursery staff members.
They are constantly assessing the children and their needs, adapting when necessary. They are active in the children development progressing the children on when they are ready. It’s a weight off my mind when I leave them at nursery, I know they are being well looked after and the children are always happy when they come home.

Toad Hall Nursery Hitchin is a fantastic nursery. My son attended for 3 years and now my daughter attends and has done for almost a year. She loves going and the staff could not be kinder and care any more for the children if they tried.
The nursery also works hard to keep parents informed and are

Hi, I’m Collette, the Nursery Manager at Toad Hall Hitchin.


I am fortunate to have successfully worked within this industry for over 23 years and hold a Level 5 Diploma in Early Years Leadership and Management. Throughout my Early years career, I have worked in many different roles including running a successful nursery for nearly 5 years.


My vision is to provide high-quality care in a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment, allowing the children to feel secure and confident. I believe this supports their growing curiosity to explore, and supports creative minds and resilience, whilst maximising success for all children.


I have always been highly focused on the well-being and development of children and believe that family partnership is the key.


My priority is to continue to lead this fantastic team and understand that a happy, successful child depends on us all working together.
