Hartford Old School House Day Nursery operates from a beautiful, old building in Hartford, Cheshire and aims to offer local parents a professional approach to childcare and an environment that is ideal for early years learning.

The setting is run by an enthusiastic management team and a team of nursery nurses with a vast range of experience in childcare. Most of the staff have been with the setting since it opened in 2006.

All education is age-specific with a wide range of resources to suit progress through the early years. There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, as well as active play. They encourage a natural, open-ended environment and are currently working towards an award for Surfers Against Sewage, which is a plastic free pledge to reduce the amount of single use plastic they use.

There is a large outside play area, with a separate 'growing area' for the children to learn about the world and grow their own vegetables. The nursery also has two guinea pigs, 3 fish, snails and stick insects.

The nursery has access to 2 minibuses and they are regularly used to transport children to forest school twice a week, for trips out to various places and they are also used to take and collect children from local schools who access wraparound care.

There are weekly visits during term time from Development First Couching who provide sports activities for the Pre-School and Jolly Giraffe room. Diddi Dance come weekly and provide a dancing class for the Busy Bees room. The local church outreach worker also come in once a fortnight to work with pre-school children on fun activities which vary each visit. Rhythm time visit Babies and Tiny Tiger children once a week too.

They also run a thriving before and after school club and holiday club (wraparound care) supporting there local school, Hartford Manor, Hartford Primary School and Davenham Primary School.

Fantastic provision. The staff are warm, knowledgable and attentive. My children have settled in so well and I have no concerns about dropping them off in the morning. When I pick them up they seem engaged and they are thriving at nursery. I’m so happy that I chose Hartford Old School House.

I have nothing but praise for all of the staff at Old School House Day Nursery and the way it is run. They have cared for two of our children and provide a caring and nurturing environment which leaves me confident that our children are well looked after.


The culture and ethos is very nurturing

and everybody goes out of their way to say hello, be warm, welcoming and positive. A number of the staff have been there a while which makes a real difference with relationships and provides continuity for the children.


The outdoor space is large, well equipped and wide-ranging. The veg patch and chickens are a great tool for the children too.


The feedback and communication we get from the staff is also great!

This is an amazing nursery! My daughter has been attending here since she was nine months old and has been through three of the different rooms, each has been exceptional as have the staff that run them. I was so anxious at the thought of having to send her to nursery but the staff were so kind, open
and genuinely caring that it made it easy. I trust this nursery implicitly and count our family lucky that we found a nursery that would give our daughter such a fabulous place to be when her parents are at work.
I also have three nieces/nephews that attend here so would highly recommend!

My daughter attends this nursery and her elder brother also attended 5 years ago. I have recommended the nursery to numerous people within this time. The staff are very welcoming and friendly.
The only thing that lacks for me is that we don't get pictures of our child at nursery very often as I know
a lot of nurseries do this daily.

The nursery is so good for my two boys. Often they don’t want to come home they are having so much fun in the massive outdoor space. The staff are friendly and caring and all know and ask after the boys. The activities are well planned and the educational progress is evident as well as the lack of tears
in the morning when they have to go. This wasn’t the case for the nursery I used to use. Overall I can’t speak highly enough of the nursery, they are flexible with dates and will do everything they can to make the children and parents happy.

We sent all our children to Hartford Old School House Day Nursery, spanning over 10 years, and never considered an alternative nursery. I rave about this place to anyone and everyone! Wonderful people, wonderful kids, wonderful setting. We loved that it almost had a home-from-home feel to it, the food
was great, the kids were allowed and encouraged to really get stuck in (and messy) and properly learn and explore. The staff are amazing - they clearly love their jobs and love the kids. The range of activities for the children every single day was really impressive, with some staff definitely going above and beyond with their ideas, creativity, planning and commitment. Our kids were super happy here - what more could a parent want?

My grandchild attended the Old School House Day Nursery for around 2 years and now having gone to school, we as a family couldn't be more happy with how he developed there. I particularly loved the broad age range of staff and it always felt so welcoming when me and my wife collected him, a real contrast
to a Nursery my other grandchild attends in Cheltenham. Would highly recommend.

My twins have recently left for school and they have been at the Nursery since 2013 when they were 4 months old. The nursery is fantastic, I have nothing but praise for the staff and the managers. We sent our first daughter there in 2010 and I would recommend Hartford to anyone looking for a 'home from
home' for their children.


There is a wonderful mix of ages of staff, lovely setting and always striving to put the children first. Very sad to be leaving, but will be using the holiday club moving forward.

It's always difficult going back to work and leaving your child with someone but I have to say all the staff at Hartford Old School are fantastic and I know they provide the best care and development. My son says 'woohoo' when I tell him he's going to nursery and I think that says everything.

Both my daughters attend the nursery and I am always content that they will be safe and well cared for. My eldest daughter is just about to leave preschool and she is ready and confident to go to school, thanks to the excellent learning environment provided. The staff are very dedicated to making sure

Hi, I'm Sarah, I am 40 years old with too many years of childcare experience to count! I did my level 3 back in 1999 followed by my foundation degree in 2012 and more recently a management qualification. I live at home with my husband, son and dog. I have had several childcare careers, including nannying, childminding and finally settling in nurseries, becoming a deputy manager in 2010 followed by a manager in 2012 and have stayed in management ever since.


Early years are my passions and I believe the best years are those of children 0-5, I feel honoured to be part of their early year's journey and nurture them to become the best!

Hi I'm Sophie, I started as an apprentice at Hartford Old School House in 2015 after leaving sixth form with 4 A levels. I was based in Tiny tigers for 3 years before moving to Preschool for 2 years. I have now taken on the role of Out of School Club leader, SENDCO and Third in charge. I enjoy working with all ages and I am a firm believer of learning through play. It has been so lovely watching little ones from back in tiny tigers leaving for big school and joining our out of school club room and carrying on their journey with us.

I first started at Hartford Old School House as a student and mixed in all different rooms to gather and gain experience with all ages.
