Sandpit Nursery is located in Barnsley town centre and has been open since 2003 and operated by 1st Safari since September 2016.

The nursery is situated close to the M1 and the main bus and train station and is close to several local schools and Barnsley College.

Sandpit Nursery provides places for children aged two who are entitled to funding (subject to certain criteria) and children who are in receipt of 3 and 4-year-old early education funding, including the 30 hours funding.

No additional fees are charged for children accessing fully funded places.

Staff follow the 'early years foundation stage' curriculum which covers children's learning and development from birth to the end of their first year in full-time education.

Each child is assigned a key person who is there to support children and parents during their time at nursery and parents will be given regular updates and information on how their child is doing and practitioners are always around to answer any questions.

The nursery was inspected by Ofsted on 13/12/2018 and was graded Good across all areas.

Funding & Fees Guide for Sandpit Nursery

  • Sessions: 8am to 1pm & 1pm to 6pm are charged at £38/session.
    8am to 6pm is charged at £66/session.
    Early starts can be arranged from 7:30am, please call to discuss your requirements.

  • Free Hours/Places for children 2-4 years (Subject to criteria), we also offer a Before and After School Care to Local Primary School and Holiday Club in School Holidays.
    Please contact us for the latest prices.
    We have a number of Sessions available to meet/match our parent's requirements.
    We do not charge for Bank Holidays or any defined days that we are closed (Normally around Christmas).

I would and have recommended this nursery to friends and family. I have been very impressed with the level of care my son has received. I think the staff are wonderfully committed to the children. The manager has created a great team and I think the low staff turnover is a testament to that. I couldn't
be happier with the nursery.

My little boy has been attending Sandpit Nursery for just under a year now and he loves it. The staff are great, informative and super friendly.
He’s come on leaps and bounds since he started and I’m definitely happy with my choice in nursery. I would certainly recommend to friends.

Excellent nursery and amazing staff! My daughter is currently in the baby (under twos) room and loves going to nursery and is always excited to go. She has come on leaps and bounds since starting. Would recommend!

We have been delighted with my grandson's progress - he's been attending nursery since he was six months old and will be leaving this year. The staff are brilliant - attentive, friendly and engaging and have built up a great rapport - my grandson loves attending nursery. The activities are well-balanced
between fun and educational and of course, the nursery encourages socialisation. Outstanding.

My daughter has really grown and come out of her shell since joining the nursery, and it's due to all the great staff that work there. They make a big deal of every occasion, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, graduation, etc, and my daughter has loved joining in with all of it. The meals are gorgeous, or
so my daughter says, and there is a wide variety. I can't thank the staff enough; they are brilliant. I would recommend the nursery to anyone.

My daughter has attended sandpit since 10 months of age when I started back at work, and she's loved every single second of it. We had no issues settling in.
The staff are so attentive and kind. They are keen to help her in her development and learning whilst having fun. My daughter was premature
and expected to be delayed in development as a result, but I strongly believe that the time and attention she receives at nursery has been a strong influencing factor which has led to absolutely no developmental delays at all.
I know my daughter is well cared for and well fed (often having extra portions) and that she has the best time, which is so reassuring as a mum.

I can't thank the whole team enough for the care that goes into looking after my Daughter every day. She was an extremely shy girl before starting nursery (thanks to the covid pandemic) but her learning and development has come on leaps and bounds. A very wide ranging menu including snacks throughout
the day too (an important factor for a child!) The staff are genuinely lovely and happy to talk and take the time to properly get to know the children and listen to any concerns parents may have.

My son has been at the nursery for over a year. He was very shy and nervous due to lockdown but with the help of the wonderful staff, he is confident and happy to go. The manager is great and they have all been supportive with my son's allergy and other health problems. They care about the children
and take interest in them. The staff are also very honest and I just can't thank them enough for making this easier for an anxious mum. They gave me an update on how he was doing when picked up. They handled the covid restrictions and the heatwave really well that I felt at ease leaving my son in their care. Would highly recommend.

After a previous hard experience with a childminder, I was nervous about sending my twin boys to a childminder again and decided to give a nursery a try; I’m so so glad I did!
They have come on leaps and bounds since attending this nursery; they absolutely love it and talk about their friends and
nursery nurses all the time.
Everyone is so caring and friendly, and they always do lots of activities and enjoy all the meals they have.
I do think an app would be nice to see what they are up to, but sheets are always given to parents at the end of the session.

Both of my children have attended Sandpit Nursery. My eldest attended 8 years ago, and came on leaps and bounds, especially as we had some worries around her behaviours. The staff were fantastic and we kept a home-school book to record everything she did and ate so we could track her behaviours and
triggers. My youngest started the term after her second birthday and she is now 3 and absolutely loves all of the staff and the other children. I love how welcoming and warm all of the staff are and have been since day one, and despite being in a pandemic, they still manage to have time to talk to the parents at each pick-up and drop-off, even though we cannot enter the building.
The children have such a great variety of meals and snacks throughout the day, and are fantastic at keeping track of allergies. They tell me what my daughter has had at every pick-up, and how much she has eaten. They are all brilliant, and deserve medals for looking after our children so well.

My little boy was at another nursery when lockdown forced it to close, so I had to find a place soon. As a key worker in the NHS, I needed him to be in the nursery.
The transition for my son was hard, but he soon got used to it quickly. The staff went above and beyond to make him welcome there. So
much so, I decided to keep him at this nursery all the time. It’s a lovely run nursery with very friendly staff. I feel like all the staff there are more mature, and mums themselves, and knew how to handle the children, which for me, was a winner. His speech and sentences have also come on leaps and bounds since starting there. Cannot praise this place enough and will be sad to see my boy leave for big school in September. Excellent place.

My daughter has attended Sandpit Nursery since she was one. She has absolutely flourished there. I cannot rate the staff more highly. In particular, how thorough they are in adapting meals to suit my daughter's allergies. There is always a mix of activities for the children, including plenty of messy
play! My daughter loves singing time and playing in the outdoor area.
A great nursery that I would recommend to anyone!

Best nursery I have ever used! They are so supportive, lovely, encouraging, and I highly recommend them. I love how my child has breakfast and a warm meal, which they can have seconds if they want to. My child is always excited to go and runs in before I can say bye, that's how much she loves it.

My granddaughter started Sandpit when she was 6-months-old and is now 2-years. The staff are amazing and show care for each child. The learning activities the children do are educational and fun with outdoor play activities too. The food the children get is healthy and different every day. My granddaughter
is a good little eater and her daily comment sheet states, she has had x2 for some meals, which shows the staff listen and adhere to each child's needs as I know our little miss will ask for more. We have been really pleased with the nursery and would highly recommend it.

Such a welcoming place to take the children. Since my daughter first went here (9-years ago) to my son attending each day presently, the staff have been and still are as amazing. Nothing is too much trouble, and no matter what, the manager has always been at the other end of the phone for me when I
have had any worries or concerns. Even tho my son cries every morning (due to habit), he comes out with amazing stories about what he has done, and he loves all the staff who look after him. My daughter still attends for morning and holiday club occasionally, which she loves. My son has come on so much with his life skills over the years, and it is all thanks to everyone at the sandpit.

My little girl has been attending Sandpit since Feb 2021 - she is 8 months old now. Her last nursery lost funding due to Covid, and she was so settled there, so I was a bit apprehensive about her moving to Sandpit. I really didn't need to worry. The staff and manager are lovely, really accomodating,
always give good updates on pickups as well as lots of pictures! The change since my little one has been going is amazing, especially with her speech. My little girl walks in waves goodbye and is straight off playing and having fun. That speaks volumes! I'm a happy mum knowing she's settled.

My son is currently attending this nursery and has been for over a year now. I have never had any faults. They have always made him feel welcome and make sure that all his needs are always taken care of very well. His development is coming on brilliantly and he always learns new things every day. The

My children have been attending Sandpit since March 2020; they were welcomed and treated amazingly. One of my children has SEN and the change in him in a few short months is amazing. The staff are so friendly, greet everyone with open arms. My children will miss everyone so much, and we can’t thank

My little boy has been coming here for around two years now. They were very accommodating with my shifts therefore helping my get back to my full time job after maternity leave. The nursery it's self is a big open room divided by small waist high walls which drew me to it as all the staff can see each
other and see all the children which appears that more eyes are on the kids more, making me feel it's safer for the kids. I am fussy with cleanliness and I cannot fault the nursery one bit. They have encouraged, educated and supported my boy through potty training, his speech and growing up to be a little gentleman. My now seven month old will definitly be going aswell when he is ready.
