  • St George's Nursery Edinburgh, Edinburgh
St George's Nursery is situated in a wing of the Junior School at St George's School in a leafy residential area of Edinburgh's West End.

They offer exceptional Early Years Education for children from 3 to 5 years of age. Children are welcome to join for the start of the term of their 3rd birthday. The nursery is co-educational.

Set in 15 acres of open parkland, the nursery is conveniently located for families living in Murrayfield, Corstorphine, Edinburgh's West End, Craigleith, and beyond.

The nursery emphasises a truly holistic approach to learning, nurturing every aspect of a child's development—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Its tailored curriculum combines innovative learning, outdoor adventures, and a focus on emotional well-being, ensuring that every child builds a strong foundation for future learning.

The curriculum inspires curiosity and creates a love for learning, particularly through STEM education. Children explore coding with robots and interactive games, developing critical skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity. Through partnerships like the Maths in Motion project with the National Galleries of Scotland, they challenge stereotypes, encourage independent thinking, and inspire children to engage in real-world learning experiences.

Their Outdoor Nursery programme is a core part of the curriculum and a key aspect of the school’s objectives in nurturing the whole child. Their grounds have some of the best outdoor nursery adventure play areas in Edinburgh.

The nursery has one qualified primary teacher who works in the nursery supported by experienced specialist early years practitioners.

Children participate in learning experiences through planned and spontaneous play in PE, ballet, music, drama, art, library, outdoor learning and woodwork.

Free Friday Morning Come and Play sessions are held for babies during term time and booked via Eventbrite.

My son is nearly finished at St G's nursery after almost three years. I could not have asked for a better experience. The staff are wonderful. His interests have been fostered at every turn, his ideas challenged, his learning made interesting and engaging. He's truly ready for school and that's thanks
in part to this amazing place. Thank you.

Our daughter started at St George's Nursery in August and we have been extremely impressed with how quickly she has settled. She has built a very strong bond with all the nursey team and her peers. We have been particularly impressed with many aspects of the nursery but particularly the organisation,
communication, and professionalism of the entire nursery team is impressive. We are happy that there is a small number of children in our daughter's class and as a result, she receives a lot of personlised support. Thank you to all the team.

An excellent nursery where the staff care for the children and learn about each as an individual. My son has flourished at St George's. He has made close connections with the staff. The regular learning updates and ability to share activities from home has made the parent experience wonderful. I wouldn't
trust anybody else with my son.
High ratio of staff to children, staff have excellent knowledge of national curriculum whilst making my son feel like he is in control of his learning.

Both our daughters have been or are currently attending the St George's Nursery and I could not be happier with it. It's such a caring, gentle and supportive environment and both our children have thrived there. My youngest daughter has recently started at the nursery and they've worked so hard to help
her settle and make her feel confident going in every day. The nursery's communication with me throughout this process has been exceptional. They really care about the children in their care and are so creative with the range of activities they provide. I can already see my youngest daughter begin to flourish in this environment and we are very grateful to the nursery team for all that they do!

St George's is a great nursery for any child starting nursery. The staff here are extremely homely, nurturing, loving, kind and very empathetic. My daughter loves going to the nursery as it's her second home. I am immensely proud of the way my daughter has grown with the support from her teachers. The
app updates and photos give you a wonderful view of the experiences the little ones are having and makes us feel so much connected. Thank you very much to all the staff for the hard work and patience.

Our daughter started in August 2023, age three, and this was her first experience of nursery. We were very concerned about her adapting to this new environment and being away from her mum for the first time. However, she was literally running into the nursery after a few days and has settled in amazingly
well. The staff are so kind and caring and we're absolutely delighted with how well it has gone. She has developed so much in the few months she's been there and is very happy. We'd highly recommend St George's!

stories at the end of each day. Thank you so much to the nursery team.

St George's is by far the best experience we have had at a nursery to date. My daughter has been in a few due to covid and then us relocating. The staff here are extremely nurturing, loving, kind and very empathetic. They celebrate each child's diversities and strengths. My daughter has grown immensely
since beginning. Her confidence has grown and her leadership and manners are well beyond her age. I would highly recommend St. George's to any parent and am proud to have my daughter be part of this school.

My daughter loves every minute at St. George's Nursery. Because such a big family with love and warmth makes my daughter happy. My daughter has just turned three years old this year. The teacher of St. George's Nursery is very kind to celebrate her birthday with children in her nursery for the first
time in her life. On behalf of myself and my family, I am very grateful for what St. George's Nursery has done for my daughter. The most important thing is that we are a new immigrant family. Our mother tongue doesn't speak English. I am very worried about my daughter's English expression. But only after arriving at St. George's Nursery. I found my daughter's English expression has made remarkable progress. In our family's mind, St. George's Nursery is the most correct choice for our family. Thanks to the teachers at St. George's Nursery. Send our family's most sincere wishes and our family's warmest love.

The nursery team is excellent, and my son settled into the nursery on day one! He loves all the activities, and there are books, songs and rugby tots. Every week we receive an update from the nursery, and the food from the school is delicious! Highly recommended!

This is a wonderful nursery! It has superb facilities with lots of outdoor space; the nursery team are motivated, caring and well-qualified; management is very sound, with lots of structure to the children's learning and good communication with parents. My child also has a nice cohort of classmates.
She has ballet classes and rugby tops too, which is great. Very happy kid and super happy parents!

Beyond helping our daughter grow, St George's is exceptionally well run. You really get the sense the entire organisation is built around the children.
Our daughter settled in quickly, and she enjoys going. What more could you ask for?

A warm and loving setting for all children. Small class sizes mean so much attention to each child that is unrivalled in other private or state nurseries, rich in play and learning resources: so much to do every day! Lots of variety each day with lots of specialist lessons in addition to the nursery
rooms and the playground: music, library, PE, ballet, the fantastical forest where children help build a campfire each week, toast marshmallows or make pizza, and play in the trees! It’s everything I want for my child. It’s a unique experience for her, and her life is enriched by the loving care of her nursery teachers. Plus, the school is unique in the area for subsidising the nursery fees since withdrawing from the council partnership, so the nursery fees match the price of a subsided place! Incredibly low fees for what my child gains!

My daughter is flourishing at St George’s Nursery. She’s in the Big Owls (preschool) now but joined in March in little owls. I couldn’t believe how quickly she settled in, all due to the warmth of the staff; they are so kind and attentive and fun. They very clearly care for every child in their class.
My daughter does exciting activities every day; she will come home talking about campfires, the fantastical forest, the mud kitchen, the list is endless. They have a wonderful colourful space inside, and outside there are so many different areas for them to play in. I could go on and on about how brilliant St George’s Nursery is! My daughter runs towards it every day!

I started using St George's Nursery during lockdown for key worker space and was so impressed that I kept my foster daughter there! The staff are wonderful and have been so sensitive to her special needs and circumstances.
I have seen her develop in confidence so much over this year! The nursery has
great indoor and outdoor space too. The nursery has handled the Covid challenges superbly with minimal disruption for the children.
Wrap around care is flexible and good.
Can’t recommend it highly enough!

Having moved our four-year-old daughter to St George’s from the nursery she had been in since a baby, I can sincerely say, my only regret is not moving her to St George’s earlier. Our daughter settled incredibly quick and absolutely loves being there. The time and effort by staff to ensure children
feel safe and welcome from day one is really lovely. Staff are truly exceptional, they get to know each child as an individual. The nursery is in such a wonderful location with fabulous outside space which the children get to enjoy daily. They have fabulous facilities and many different classes for children to partake in throughout the week, ballet, woodwork in the forest, and sing and sign to be favourites of our daughter. There is a real family feel to this nursery which seems to carry on throughout the school as a whole. Properly cooked food for snacks and lunch. Our daughter is truly having the most wonderful time at St George’s learning, having fun, and making friends. Just great.

It is just the most wonderful nursery, we couldn’t be happier with the care both of our children have had. There is a fantastic focus on outdoor play, child-orientated play, all in a very nurturing and caring environment. There is also the superb access to specialist teachers for music, dance and the
weekly library visit. Other practitioners for Sing and Sign also come in, while the additional activities include cooking, beach school, yoga and regular visits to the local nursing home. It’s outstanding. Both of our children have been so happy there.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.310)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.310) out of 10 for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.881 for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is calculated as follows: ( (75 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.881

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.429 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 number of registered child places is 9.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.729

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
