  • St George's Nursery Edinburgh, Edinburgh
St George's Nursery is situated in a wing of the Junior School at St George's School in a leafy residential area of Edinburgh's West End.

They offer exceptional Early Years Education for children from 3 to 5 years of age. Children are welcome to join for the start of the term of their 3rd birthday. The nursery is co-educational.

Set in 15 acres of open parkland, the nursery is conveniently located for families living in Murrayfield, Corstorphine, Edinburgh's West End, Craigleith, and beyond.

The nursery emphasises a truly holistic approach to learning, nurturing every aspect of a child's development—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Its tailored curriculum combines innovative learning, outdoor adventures, and a focus on emotional well-being, ensuring that every child builds a strong foundation for future learning.

The curriculum inspires curiosity and creates a love for learning, particularly through STEM education. Children explore coding with robots and interactive games, developing critical skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity. Through partnerships like the Maths in Motion project with the National Galleries of Scotland, they challenge stereotypes, encourage independent thinking, and inspire children to engage in real-world learning experiences.

Their Outdoor Nursery programme is a core part of the curriculum and a key aspect of the school’s objectives in nurturing the whole child. Their grounds have some of the best outdoor nursery adventure play areas in Edinburgh.

The nursery has one qualified primary teacher who works in the nursery supported by experienced specialist early years practitioners.

Children participate in learning experiences through planned and spontaneous play in PE, ballet, music, drama, art, library, outdoor learning and woodwork.

Free Friday Morning Come and Play sessions are held for babies during term time and booked via Eventbrite.

Our daughter aged 3 has attended nursery for the last term. We have been incredibly impressed with how quickly she has settled in to enjoy nursery life.

Weekly she has PE, library visits, ballet, campfire and outdoor play and a music class! The facilities and classes are fantastic but what makes

the experience so incredible for us is that all the wonderful teaching staff in the nursery have found a way to connect with our daughter. They have listened and watched her and within a very short timeframe we're making her laugh and really understanding what makes her tick.

Our daughter needs encouragement to try new things. She has managed to take part in so much more than we ever imagined because of the motivation and help of the teachers. She comes back home worn out but really full of happiness and pleased with herself. It's clear from her learning, growth and the joy we see that we made the right decision in sending her to St George's.

My son is extremely happy at the nursery, so much so that we extended his hours because he wanted to spend more time there! It provides a warm, happy and stimulating environment with plenty of outdoor play, which was a very important factor for us. The staff are delightful and make my son feel welcome
every morning and they seem to encourage independence yet there is a structure to their day.

As a family, we have experienced a few nurseries in Edinburgh and abroad and we feel St George's Nursery is one of the best we've encountered - it is a shame we'll have to remove him for his preschool year!

The nursery environment is both highly professional and caring. A great deal of support is given to the children who are well prepared for entering Primary 1.

This is a really nice nursery, with excellent facilities, and very friendly and attentive staff. Our son has adapted really quickly to being left alone, and getting used to playing with other children, and the staff are really accommodating in looking after the individual needs of each child.

This nursery has been fantastic for my son. It feels like a little oasis in the heart of Edinburgh, with lots of outdoor space for the children to explore. The children also access other parts of the school as well for music, PE and so on.

The staff are incredibly welcoming and although new to nursery

life, my son settled after a week and now talks excitedly about what he gets up to on his nursery days. I have been impressed with the range of activities that they do with the children, so that there is also something new and fun to get involved with. Such as one week, where they had a camp fire in the 'fantastical forest' and had sausage rolls and another week the children were doing an 'Elmer' the elephant walk (imagine stomp...) around the school.

I feel that they work hard to ensure parents are engaged and well informed about their child's progress and they always have time for you as a parent, as and when you need it.

My wife and I have both been delighted at the care, supervision and environment provided for our 3-year-old daughter.
All of the staff are so warm and friendly and our daughter quickly adapted to her new environment within the first week of her time there. We have been particularly impressed with both
the indoor facilities and the outdoor learning environment "fantastical forest"!
We would have no hesitation in recommending the nursery to any prospective parents considering placing their children.

Being a foreigner, my son for the first week cried a lot and loud, but the very dedicated teachers patiently attended to him, I feel very glad with the tremendous achievement and know that my son is in safe hands.

We invested a lot of time and effort reviewing and visiting nurseries before deciding on St Georges and one year on are absolutely convinced that we made the best decision and that our daughter will have a great nursery experience followed by a great school experience at St George's.

The grounds

and the way in which they are used is superb - the fantastical forest is...well, fantastical!

The effort that is invested in and the structure that is in place around the transition from each stage of nursery to the next and ultimately to P1 could not be better.

Love the focus on child lead learning and the flexible approach which is adopted around listening to the children and taking classes down the roads the children want them to.

The quality of the staff in terms of academic qualifications, relevant experience and personalities is beyond impressive.

We are very pleased with St George's Nursery, we chose this one after visiting many nurseries in Edinburgh. On the few occasions we have been concerned, our worries have been addressed with speed and to our satisfaction. I would recommend this nursery to any parent.

- I think St George's School for Girls Nursery is brilliant. My daughter joined the nursery last November, she has been happy from the first day, settled into the nursery daily routine.
- Great outdoor spaces and indoor facilities.
- Keep parents updated about each child's activities in the nursery.

Very happy with St George's School for Girls Nursery.

All staff are nurturing and interested in children's well being. The experiences the girls receive are wide and often relevant. My daughter has been very happy there, has developed well and clearly engages in the activities provided.

I would

welcome more outdoor play/learning; I don't think this should be led by weather. Also the after school care is of a much lower standard. Watching television is a disappointing "activity" even more so on lovely weather days.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have found such a very high standard of care for our daughter. The staff are incredibly kind and build learning around the children's experiences and interests. The indoor and outdoor facilities are beautiful and well maintained. It has been a wonderful choice
to send our children to St George's.

We chose St G's as we love the size of the school & feeling that you get whenever you approach the school-it is so much more than just a place of learning-there is a real tangible sense of community &belonging all around.

The nursery learning approach is very much child lead & play based. There

is a very Montessori feel to the approach but with a mix elements which is a credit to the staff & a reflection of their experience. Classes like baking, ballet, gym days, regular performances, gardening are all about encouraging /developing fine different motor skills. The size & use of the school grounds is superb as they base a lot of the learning on playing outdoors which we love hearing about from our daughter & following in her online learning journals.

Ultimately, no matter where your child goes on to primary school, the time they will have spent at St G's nursery will give them a lot of happy memories and leave them well rounded and ready to start both P1 and the rest of their life.

Wonderful nursery, we have been delighted with everything. The inside and outside spaces are first class, especially the garden - a real home from home environment.

The staff are outstanding - they really got to know our son and the style of communication and care is extremely personable.

I couldn't

recommend St George's highly enough.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.310)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.310) out of 10 for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.881 for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is calculated as follows: ( (75 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.881

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.429 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St George's Nursery Edinburgh is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 number of registered child places is 9.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.729

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
