Breaside Preparatory School Early Years offers a happy learning environment for children from the age of two and a half years, where they are motivated and encouraged to learn and discover. The experienced early years teaching staff create a positive and wonderful environment for the children, where children can take part in both learning through play and teacher initiated activities.

The curriculum prepares children for the senior schools of choice through a balanced and broadly based education, from their first days in early years through to the age of 11. They believe in getting the basics right and teaching the core subjects with a mixture of traditional teaching styles with the more modern approaches to learning.

Breaside has been awarded Millie’s Mark! This is a great achievement as a school, and they are grateful for all the hard work and commitment from their staff towards helping them to exceed health & safety and paediatric first aid requirements.

The school has an excellent record of academic success with impressive KS1 and KS2 results well above the national average. 100% of pupils gained their first choice at Senior School. Ranked 11th in the Top 100 Independent Preparatory Schools in England, featured in the Sunday Times Schools Guide 2019.

In September 2023, Breaside expanded with the opening of a second site on Widmore Road. This new site offers the same exciting learning environment with a holistic approach to education. The expansion includes bright Early Years classrooms and extended outdoor learning spaces, including a Forest School.

Breaside Preparatory School is a wonderful school and our two children have been extremely happy here. Our daughter has just completed a year in kindergarten which she has enjoyed enormously. Every day is filled with fun activities together with educational early learning all delivered with both warmth
and encouragement by the teachers and teaching assistants.
Our son, who is now 7, has transformed from being somewhat shy and difficult into an extremely confident and happy little boy, well advanced in reading, writing, maths and English, with confidence to speak in public, has learned to play the trumpet, loves after school football club and has been given an amazing knowledge and understanding of the world at such a young age.
From kindergarten onwards, the children enjoy a first-class education in a warm and nurturing environment, all delivered by the excellent array of teachers and spearheaded by the outstanding principal. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our children.

Outstanding academics as well as extremely nurturing environment. We have been delighted with the service provided by this school for my son who has joined as a clingy little boy and has now become a confident 7-year-old achieving excellent results across academic subjects, music and sports. Strongly
recommend also for little ones, my daughter is currently in kindergarten and the range of fun learning activities as well as care received is exceptional.

I think Breaside Preparatory School has been an excellent experience not only for my son but also for us, as parents. We have never had such an interactive connection with any other schools in the past, even when we were growing up.
I just feel that there should be more sports clubs (rugby, hockey,
cricket, football and basketball) available at the school from kindergarten onwards.

Reply from Nicole Owen, Early Years Lead at Breaside Preparatory School

We are delighted to hear that Breaside has been such a positive experience for you as well as your son. We believe the Early Years is such an important time to lay down the foundations of learning and we pride ourselves on ensuring each child's individual needs are met. Thank you for highlighting the need for more sports, we are pleased to say that we will now have an after-school club, with a range of sports available, starting this September that will be available to Kindergarten and Pre Prep.

Breaside is a very warm and caring educational setting that provides my child with the right environment to learn and thrive.
Over the past six months, my child has evolved from being reserved at school and sometimes hesitant to go in, to now being happy, chatty with his friends and teachers, and
eager to attend school. This is attributable to the warmth of the staff, particularly the Early Years Team, who patiently engage my child in various fun learning activities that help improve my child's physical, emotional, social, and mental health.

Reply from Nicole Owen, Early Years Lead at Breaside Preparatory School

Breaside's early years provisions have been absolutely incredible for my little girl. The teachers and one-to-one support received are second to none, fostering a nurturing, inclusive environment for a diverse range of children. My daughter has learned so much, academically, socially, and emotionally,
and has truly flourished here.
Teachers pay close attention to children and their progress, knowing when to extend the challenge level and when to cement more entry-level concepts. I am so grateful they have given her such an amazing start in life; learning to read by age 4, fostering a love of French and Spanish languages, providing an introduction to yoga, and encouraging her love of art and sports. I truly believe no other nursery environment could have given her so much and I can't wait to see where she goes from here!

Sending our little girl to Breaside Preparatory School has been one of the best decisions we've made. She has become so interested in learning; not just about traditional school curriculum, but also important life skills, such as putting on their coats and identifying their emotions. The teachers are
wonderful, it goes without saying that they are brilliant at what they do, but more importantly for the little ones, they are warm, kind and inviting. Our little girl thrives on routine and structure, and the kindergarten curriculum gives her that sense of confidence and security. She particularly loves PE, yoga/mindfulness and forest school. As parents, we love to see their weekly updates, complete with photos of their activities and achievements. We also particularly love the broad range of healthy food that's served at school, which has made her much more open to trying new food at home!

Reply from Mrs Nicky Ridgway, Head of Early Years at Breaside Preparatory School

Thank you so much for your kind review. We are delighted to read your comments and it really means the world to us. In Kindergarten, we believe that the 3 prime areas of learning are the foundations that build their Early Years journey. Life skills such as managing their emotions and putting their coats on are some of the prime areas we cover, so we are really pleased that you have recognised this. Thank you for your comments on the weekly updates, this is always something we work hard on to ensure our parents get a good overview of what their children are learning and activities they are taking part in. Lastly, thank you for sharing your positive thoughts on the healthy food the children have, we are thrilled to read that this has aided to your daughter trying more foods at home!

I wish it was them dropping me off and them going to work most days. Especially when they eat homemade bread for lunch. Both of mine started at 2.5 years old, which I thought was young at the time, but the setting and teachers are fantastic. They've never said they don't want to go in. It's great that
even in Kindergarten they have specialist teachers for subject areas like PE! Also a bit like with NCT, you're also buying yourself a fantastic set of friends for your children and also yourself. All other parents are invested in their children as much as you are. You only get one chance at early years education in life and Breaside is the best by far in the area. Only bit to warn you on is the birthday party circuit (it's actually quite fun though!). I wouldn't send them anywhere else.

My youngest is currently attending pre-prep at Breaside Preparatory School and he absolutely loves it, just as his older sister did when she was there as well. The teachers are lovely, the facilities are great and the teaching is perfect! My two both come out of school every day with huge smiles on
their faces and both are learning loads at the same time. They’ve made such great friends and feel safe and secure with their teachers.

Our son joined Breaside in September 2020 as part of the Kindergarten cohort, and we have not looked back! Our experience has been flawless, from brilliant parent and staff engagement and communication, to how well settled and supported we have been in adapting to 'everyday school life'. The early year's
curriculum is something special. This has been fostered by an amazing pool of teachers, who genuinely care for the children and ensure that each child is nurtured as an individual, in a happy and safe learning environment. Our son's capabilities in language, reading and writing have flourished, and we have been delighted that his interactions and development has centred around diverse and interesting social, cultural and academic subjects.
We could not be happier with the school and are so proud (and lucky) to be part of the Breaside family.

Both my children have attended the early years at Breaside with my daughter currently still in Pre-prep. It has been a truly positive experience and I’ve seen them both flourish and develop into happy children. The teachers are lovely and so welcoming to the children and their parents. Lots of time
is spent not only on them learning academic things like phonics, writing, numbers and french but also on developing them socially, mentally and physically. Both my children have loved forest school and yoga and time is spent getting them used to what school will be like in the coming years and encouraging them to be more independent with dressing and toileting. After school clubs are also available, so my daughter is able to do ballet and teacher-led clubs, which she loves. The teachers are approachable and in my experience have truly wanted to help my children excel and be happy. The whole school has a real community feel with parents being included as much as possible. Excellent!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, in particular your comments on our broad and enriched curriculum. It is paramount to us that we deliver a high level of academic and social learning experiences. Our son started Kindergarten back in September 2021 and has enjoyed every minute. He’s always so excited to go in, and we have been very impressed with his teachers and what he has learnt so far. They give constant updates on his learning for parents to then continue at home. They also teach good manners
and encourage independence. They support the children with their learning and development. We also plan to send his sister to the school when she reaches age. Thank you to his teachers!

My daughter started in January 2021 and I’m so happy with her all around progress so far. She is also very happy to be there. All the teachers and staff are so welcoming from the second you set foot on the premises. The parent to teacher communication is also brilliant. There is a good structure to
the day and throughout the term. We as parents are told what they will be doing each week. We also get access to pictures, videos and regular updates of what the child has been doing via an online portal. Highly recommend this school.

My daughter has been at Breaside since kindergarten (now in Year 2), and I could not be happier with our choice of school. The teachers from Kindergarten upwards are caring and extremely professional, positive and overall fantastic at what they do. The school is more like a large family. The support
staff in the office also deserve a special mention. I have only positive words for Breaside School. Their recent results in the recent Sunday Times prove their teaching is of an excellent standard. They have handled the Covid pandemic brilliantly, maintaining positivity and continuing to keep pupils engaged.

My child started going to Breaside Day Nursery at the age of 2.5 years old until July 2020 (just started Reception). The nursery has been very attentive to ensure each individual child gets the time to get used to the new setting. The staff always smile and very happy to have one on one conversation
should any parent have anything specific to discuss. My child was naturally very shy when they started at the day nursery however, their confidence has grown enormously in the nurturing environment. The nursery has also been great developing the skills my child would need to go into reception, and it is quite remarkable how they managed to put together the fantastic Christmas / Mothers and Father's day performances and also a sports day for children at this age.
They are brilliant to bring out the best abilities of each child and they let them develop in their own speed and time. My child goes back to give the nursery staff a cuddle every time they see them. I can only recommend Breaside!

We are extremely happy with our son in Breaside. The teachers are fantastic and all the classes are well designed, it’s fun and very educational. My son is in PP at the moment, he has learned a lot academically as well as all the traditional festivals and celebrations, they have even started their French

Breaside is a school which is academically very good and one of the reasons we wanted our child to attend. But what is so special about this school is the family feel it has. All of the teachers and staff are lovely yet so professional. My child enjoys going to school every day starting in Kindergarten
and now in Pre-Prep. The transition was well managed. The management of the school through this pandemic has been commendable. I am proud of the school, the staff, the lovely atmosphere of the school but most important is how happy my child is.

Current Review Score: 8.8 (8.846)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.8 (8.846) out of 10 for Breaside Preparatory School is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.958 for Breaside Preparatory School is calculated as follows: ( (69 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.958

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.888 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Breaside Preparatory School is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 104 number of registered child places is 20.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 20.8 = 0.288

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

With over 35 years of experience working within Early years I have dedicated my career to nurturing young minds and supporting children’s growth and development. Over the years I have had the privilege of seeing children blossom, each with their own unique learning styles and potential.
Children learn in different ways and I understand the importance of adapting activities to create a supportive and engaging learning environment, where they feel safe, confident and excited to learn.

I joined Breaside nearly 3 years ago, initially as an Early years Teaching Assistant in Pre-Prep and now as the Deputy Room Leader. It’s a real joy to be part of this close team. Whether its through ‘Hands-On’ exploration or Creative play, everyone appreciates that learning is a fun and rewarding experience and lays a strong foundation for every child’s future success.
