  • Muddy Boots at the Bungalow, Exeter
Located in the heart of Pinhoe, this cosy bungalow embraces the same outstanding, outdoor, and eco-conscious ethos as all Muddy Boots nurseries, providing a calm and nurturing environment where children can thrive.

The setting focuses on child-led learning, with resources placed at a low level, encouraging children to explore and self-select. A simple block of wood can transform into a car, a phone, or part of a tower, fostering creativity and imaginative play.

Staff are always on hand to scaffold and support, ensuring a positive and encouraging atmosphere without interference or judgement. The large garden offers as many opportunities for learning and exploration as the indoor spaces, strongly emphasising fresh air, exercise, and muddy adventures. Children spend as much time outdoors as possible, benefiting from a no-fuss, child-focused approach that allows them to develop at their own pace, growing into confident, curious individuals prepared for their educational journey and beyond.

Nice nursery, especially the welcoming indoor setup, the cleanliness, the engaging activities, and the emphasis on spending time outdoors. The staff members are always kind and caring, which we truly appreciate. However, we have noticed a high staff turnover, which can sometimes be a bit unsettling
for the children as they build relationships with their caregivers. We understand that staffing challenges exist, but we hope there is a way to bring more stability to the team.
It would be nice to have more lightning as it's hard to see when going to the building especially at pick up in winter time. The car park gets a bit flooded when it rains.

Thank you so much for your feedback! We're pleased to hear that you appreciate our welcoming environment, engaging activities, and the care our team provides. Creating a safe, fun, and nurturing space for children is so important to us. We understand your concerns about staff turnover. While some changes are unavoidable, we're always working to keep our team as consistent as possible to support the children's relationships and routines. We also really appreciate your comments about the lighting and the car park. We know how tricky winter pick-ups can be and will look into improving this.

I am very pleased with the overall experience my son has at nursery. Attending nursery has enhanced his social skills and he often tells me about the friends he plays with. I love seeing photos of the activities he's taken part in on the app, and there's always a range of different activities available
which enhances so many different skills whether it's fine motor, pencil control or maths for example. He never has a bad day at nursery, and they always spend some time outside which my son loves - he loves playing in mud or running around with a big stick! The additional Spanish classes provided I think are an excellent way of introducing different languages and cultures to children at a young age, and hopefully sets him up for a life of curiosity and an eagerness to explore the world. Recently at Christmas, he was given a book as a Christmas present which was extremely thoughtful, especially as he loves reading and bedtime stories.

My child has attended this nursery since April 2024. The general facilities and cleanliness is very good and my child has always come home happy and is learning at a good rate. However there are areas where this nursery needs to improve, mainly with staff, the nursery staff are not very talkative to
parents when picking and dropping off your children. The staff no longer allow you in the room to drop and collect your child so you are in a small area where everyone can hear your conversations and there is a general lack of privacy and sensitive conversations are not private at all. Staff also forgot to give medication back at end of the day. The staff of a nursery are very important to the children and parents who build up relationships so it is a shame. Overall this nursery is excellent for learning has good facilities and very clean. I would recommend this nursery as I feel although there is room for improvement the general qualities are good and the faults can be easy improved.

Current Review Score: 7.5 (7.458)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.5 (7.458) out of 10 for Muddy Boots at the Bungalow is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.0 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.000 for Muddy Boots at the Bungalow is calculated as follows: ( (10 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.458 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Muddy Boots at the Bungalow is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 number of registered child places is 6. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 6 = 0.333

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
