The Millie’s Mark award certifies that in a nursery (or in our case, in all our nurseries) all practitioners are fully trained in paediatric first aid and are confident enough to deliver first aid if they need to.
Millie’s Trust was set up by Joanne and Dan Thompson in 2012 after their nine month old daughter Millie tragically died from choking on food while at nursery. The organisation now campaigns to increase legal first aid requirements amongst childcare providers.
Millie’s Mark is delivered by Millie’s Trust in partnership with the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA), and supported by the Department for Education.
The aim of Millie’s Mark is to keep children safe and minimise risk and accidents by:
Raising standards in paediatric first aid
Increasing numbers of paediatric first aid-trained practitioners
Increasing confidence and competencies in applying paediatric first aid – no matter what the situation
Enabling practitioners to respond quickly in emergencies
Raising the quality and skills of the early years workforce and helping them with day-to-day first aid issues, such as allergies
Providing reassurance to parents.
