Sun Safe Nurseries Award - Invitation 2 Play

Recipient: Invitation 2 Play

Date: Thursday 22 Feb 2018

Sun Safe Nurseries is an initiative developed by the national skin cancer charity, ‘Skcin’ following the launch of Sun Safe Schools which aims to
plant the seeds of sun safety not just at home but in the classroom to
ensure that our children grow up with sufficient knowledge of sun safety
and that nursery aged school children are adequately protected against
the sun’s harmful rays during the hours they are in nursery care.

Established in 2006, the primary objectives of Skcin (The Karen Clifford
Skin Cancer Charity - Registered Charity Number: 1116440) are to
significantly raise awareness of skin cancer with a focus on prevention
and early detection, whilst campaigning for cultural and educational
change.
Skin cancer is the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer that is
almost entirely preventable if appropriate preventative measures are undertaken. In order to combat the soaring rates of the disease which
is now the biggest cancer killer in young adults aged 15-34, Skcin firmly
believe that education from a young age is key in establishing the
necessary culture change.
Both the Sun Safe Schools and Sun Safe Nurseries Award Schemes have
been specifically developed to provide schools, nurseries, parents and
carers with appropriate sun safety advice and teaching resources that
introduce and reinforce the importance of sun safe messaging to young
children that will impact their lives and those of generations to come,
whilst ensuring that nurseries and primary schools are committed to
fulfilling their duty of care to ensure the safety of children in their care.
